Welcome in. Glad you found this place. It’s called Nine Straight Threes. Why? Because one time, long ago, I made nine straight three-pointers (on nine consecutive possessions) in a pickup basketball game at Penn State.
That was the apex of my sports career, and other than providing an explanation for the name of this newsletter, it’s probably the last you’ll hear of it. But now you know.
A little about me, if you’re randomly stumbling across this newsletter: I’ve been in radio since 2008, and since 2013 have co-hosted a show called The PM Team on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh. Yes, people still listen to the radio. I promise. I also write on occasion for Yardbarker.
I also wrote sports columns for the Beaver County Times from 2012 until, well, a few weeks ago. It might not shock you to find out that the conglomerates that own regional newspapers that utilize freelancers for things like sports columns sometimes suddenly and arbitrarily decide that the freelance budget is going bye-bye.
Either way, my bosses at the BCT were great, and I had plenty of latitude to opine not just on Pittsburgh sports, but national stories as a whole. That’s what I plan on doing here; expect 2-3 column-style pieces per week for paid members. Free members can expect a post per week, sometimes two. A majority will be about Pittsburgh sports. Occasionally I’ll throw out something more broadly focused. There might be mailbags, if this thing gets popular, and there will be some slice of life stuff; mainly musings on cooking, golf, parenthood, etc.
Make no mistake, though, this is first and foremost a newsletter about Pittsburgh sports. Let’s have some fun.
